Workshop: New Perspectives on Transformative Experience

Workshop

One-Day Workshop, June 7 2018
In this workshop we bring together researchers from the US and Sweden to discuss the nature of transformative choices and the transformative experiences they bring with them. Are such choices necessarily irrational? If they are, should this stop us from making them? What does how we view the nature of transformative choices entail; for counselling, for informed consent? And so on.

Some choices are transformative. In making them, you "become someone else". Typically, transformative choices are also the ones we consider the most important. Like that of deciding to have your first child. Or that of choosing to have a cochlear-implant. These are all choices we care about very much. We want to make good choices. Which, to most, means that we want to make them in a considered and rational fashion. However, according to Laurie Paul (2014), because of their special nature, transformative choices (at least if understood as made from the first-person perspective) cannot be rational. For if the choice is transformative, the preferences available to the decision-maker are not (or not necessarily) those of the person having to live with the choices made.

Lecturer: The workshop features presentations by Laurie Paul (Eugene Falk Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill Professorial Fellow in the Arché Research Centre at the University of St Andrews), Nomy Arpaly (Professor of Philosophy, Brown University), Johan Brännmark (Associatie Professor, Malmö University), Krister Bykvist (Researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies and Professor in Practical Philosophy, Stockholm University), Elisabeth Furberg (Senior Lecturer, Uppsala University), Anders Herlitz (Researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies and COFAS Marie Curie Fellow, University of Gothenburg), and Orri Stefánsson (Researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies and Associate Professor at Stockholm University).
