Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science

At our department, you can study some of the most fundamental issues of human thought and communication; many of today's sciences and everyday conceptions originate with these questions.

We provide training in basic critical thinking that can be applied to virtually any other area or discipline. Our subjects are ideal as an introduction or complement to almost any kind of studies or research.

Theoretical philosophy focuses on how the world is constituted and how we can know and express something about it, while practical philosophy deals with how the world ought to be, i.e. questions about norms, values and ideologies. History of Philosophy at the department has a focus on the ancient and medieval philosophical development and a strong philological foundation. Hence, Classical Philology (Latin and Greek) is also one of the department’s disciplines. Theory of science deals with empirical and theoretical meta-studies of scientific research. General linguistics investigates the human capacity for language, commonalities of human languages and linguistic communication, while phonetics more specifically examines various aspects of spoken language in the fields of speech production, speech perception and speech acoustics. Language technology is about how computers can be used to handle human language, spoken as well as written. The department also carries out research in logic, which include studies of formal languages, the relationship between language and structures, and correct reasoning.
